  • ABB’s Relion® protection relays selected by leading chemical company BASF for switchgear modernization project

  • ABB’s service experts design, install and commission the upgrade solution to guarantee reliable, safe and uninterrupted power supply at one of Korea’s largest industrial sites

Thirty years after it was constructed, global chemical company BASF decided to overhaul the electrical infrastructure at its facility in Yeosu in Korea. The aim of the investment was to improve production reliability in the Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) zone at this world class site, which is one of seven operated by BASF in Korea.

To ensure reliable power at the site, BASF decided to invest in new medium-voltage (MV) switchgear. And ABB’s local team of experts proposed a pragmatic and sustainable solution to further improve reliable operations - to upgrade protection and control to ABB’s market-leading protection relays.

After reviewing the application requirements and needed performance of the new switchgear at the plant, ABB recommended the Relion® 615 series protection relays to further enhance electrical performance and uptime at the plant.

Designed as a future proof technical solution, ABB’s Relion protection relays are the ideal solution for delivering the highest levels of reliability, providing safe and continuous power to all electrical installations, and protecting the assets against electrical incidents to ensure the greatest possible uptime and therefore productivity.

BASF Yeosu E&I Maintenance Team Head, Byeong-Soo Choi, said: “BASF planned to replace the aging electrical equipment, and took this opportunity to replace third party protection relays with ABB’s reliable relays, contributing to process stabilization.”

“A team of ABB experts has been available every step of the way to support us with any potential problems and we look forward to our continued work with ABB in the future as a trusted business partner.”

The compact and versatile Relion 615 series protection relays can be used in both utility and industry power distribution systems. The relay integrates protection, control, monitoring and supervision all in one device. The series offers wide application coverage and an extensive range of functionality, offering both advanced fast fault location of short circuits and earth faults, plus three-channel arc-fault protection to increase personal safety.

“ABB has been a trusted partner for BASF Korea for many years, having supplied the switchgear solution for the Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) production area at the factory,” said Chung-Won Lee, Marketing and Sales Manager, Electrification Service, at ABB in Korea.

“When BASF Korea needed to improve productivity in the MDI area, we were very keen to extend our support to them. We teamed up with a local channel partner, Jung engineering, and proposed ABB’s protection relays. This solution meant we could ensure enhanced electrical reliability of the installed switchgear in a cost-effective way, which BASF was seeking.”

Yeosu is one of the largest industrial areas in Korea, accounting for half of Korea’s petrochemical production. The Yeosu National Industrial Complex began operation in 1979, and now includes 283 companies on a site spanning 23.502 million square meters.
