June 2025 – In a move aligning with the UK’s tightening fire safety regulations, Amokabel has announced the release of a new Construction Products Regulation (CPR) fire performance Cca-rated version of its BS 8436 Flexishield cable, Flexishield-Cca®, marking a significant step forward in fire-resistant electrical infrastructure. This development comes at a pivotal time, as the UK government accelerates implementation of the 58 recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report1.
The Grenfell tragedy in 2017, which claimed 72 lives, exposed critical failures in building safety, particularly around combustible materials and inadequate evacuation strategies. In response, the UK government has committed to a comprehensive overhaul of fire safety legislation, including:
Mandatory accreditation for fire risk assessors and fire engineers2.
A transition from BS 476 to European fire testing standards (which includes BS EN 13501-6, classifying cables based on their response to fire testing)3.
A review of Approved Document B and the clear definition of “higher-risk buildings”4.
These reforms are to be rolled out with a strong emphasis on product accountability, resident safety and industry transparency.
Under the BS EN 13501-6 classification system, a Cca rating indicates that a cable has a limited contribution to fire, with low smoke production and minimal flaming droplets. This is a significant upgrade from lower-rated cables (e.g., Dca, Eca or Fca), which are more prone to spreading fire and producing toxic smoke.
Amokabel’s new Flexishield-Cca® variant meets this higher standard, making it the first shielded fail-safe BS 8436 compliant cable suitable for use in higher risk applications such as escape routes, high-rise residential buildings, public buildings, hospitals, and schools - settings where higher fire performance is critical.
