RDF Lighting Power and Control delivers slave emergency lighting solution for South Yorkshire School

19-07-2021

news

This popular primary and junior school in South Yorkshire has recently extended their premises to allow them to accept extra nursery places. A fire risk assessment identified the need for additional emergency lighting and exit signage in the premises and so the school wanted to find a solution which kept the existing 24V central battery system being used to power exit signs and emergency lighting elsewhere in the building. The school had contacted RDF Lighting Power and Control after struggling to identify an emergency lighting provider that had a central battery slave emergency lighting product range.

RDF surveyed the emergency lighting and escape route signage ensuring the existing 24V central battery system was providing the required 3-hour duration, testing the existing emergency light fittings and identifying the areas where new emergency fittings would be required following the BS 5266-1:2016 guidelines.

All schools that invite people into their premises that are not their teachers or students require emergency lighting and exit signage to allow the safe exit from the building under a mains failure situation where the normal lighting will not be illuminated.

The school’s requirements were to keep with the aesthetics and style of their new décor whilst also choosing a good value product that had an extended warranty period. The ONTEC S20 combination bulkhead emergency light and exit sign was chosen for the new area meaning the school benefitted from a 5-year warranty on the product with also 3 years on the long life Lithium battery.

Elsewhere in the building the school were interested in saving energy on the exit signs that were permanently illuminated and replacing any failed units with products compatible with their existing central battery system. RDF were able to select from their slave exit sign range, providing the 24V LED slave ONTEC S which delivered a significant energy saving over the fluorescent equivalents without any reduction in the light output. Again, the replacement came with a full 5-year warranty.

The school were delighted with the more modern and discrete look of the ONTEC S lights and exit signs as well as looking forward to the savings on their energy use.

Central battery systems are still very popular in schools and colleges which is why RDF have a range of central battery slave lights and exit signs that work with 24V, 50V, 110V and 230C central systems.

We can also offer addressable central systems that automate the reports required to log the monthly and annual emergency lighting testing.
