New Gewiss street lighting for Manchester Metropolitan University, Crewe campus

26-03-2015

Crewe

As a leading educational institution, Manchester Metropolitan University is forging ahead with its environmental strategy. The university has come from 91st to first place for greenest universities, by tackling energy, water waste, carbon management, compliance and sustainable travel.  The university is committed to using energy efficient equipment, and has made the important transition to LED lighting, which is increasingly being installed as standard.

As part of an energy saving project to meet the University’s carbon footprint targets, and to reduce campus maintenance and running costs at its Crewe Campus, MMU installed 49 Gewiss Street [O3] energy-saving LED street lights, in pedestrianised areas and car parks.

Saving energy was not the only consideration;  a high performance, quality lighting solution was needed as the pedestrianised zone required more reliable lighting, to make the area safer for the public and staff. Local wholesaler TN Robinson was charged with proposing a suitable solution and delivering the project on time, within budget, while ensuring the safety of the public and contractors on site during the upgrade.

TN Robinson took on board the specific requirements of MMU’s facilities manager to identify a lighting solution.  Following an extensive selection process, and in close consultation with the university, Street [O3] was selected from a wide range of street lighting from a number of manufacturers.

“Gewiss’ Street [O3] Street Lighting ticked all the boxes and a few more,” says Dr John Hindley, Head of Environmental Strategy at MMU.  “It has superior, high-quality components and delivers the energy-efficiency we have committed to as a University.  We were also impressed by the stylish design of the units.”

Peter Whelan, account manager at TN Robinson commented:  “The Street [O3] offered a considerable improvement in terms of performance, and we were able to use the original lighting points - which was both cost effective and convenient.  Gewiss’ lighting provides an excellent payback potential for the University.  It is easy to install and came with an extended 5 year warranty; an important factor; giving peace of mind to our customer.”
