Mandatory CO alarms for Northern Ireland

26-04-2011

The Northern Ireland Executive has announced that carbon monoxide (CO) alarms will become mandatory under amended Building Regulations. This regulation will apply to combustion appliances using any fuel.

This move makes the regulations in Northern Ireland more stringent than those in England, Wales and Scotland. England and Wales are covered by Approved Document J of the Building Regulations 2010, which only requires carbon monoxide alarms to be fitted where fixed solid fuel heating appliances are in use. Scotland has no requirement for CO alarms.
