Arctic cable warning

20-11-2011

The Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) is warning of potential problems with so-called ‘arctic cable’, designed for use at low temperatures, following issues with faulty cable last year. These issues included poor conductor resistance and disintegration of sheathing and insulation in cold bending tests.

Identification of poor quality arctic cable can be difficult as it is sold under many brands, or even unbranded, so the ACI recommends only using third party approved cable.

Arctic cable is usually either yellow or blue and is commonly used on construction sites for temporary outdoor wiring, as well as applications such as cold stores.
